Natalie Walker & Thievery Corporation
Natalie Walker is a former member of the downtempo / triphop group Daughter Darling. Their album, Sweet Shadows, was released in 2003. I didn't hear of it until 2005, but when I did, I had to know more. That's when I learned of Natalie's solo material, and I've been in touch off and on ever since, waiting for a good chance to post about her. One thing or another kept getting in the way. The wait is over. Natalie is promoting her new album, Urban Angel.
Thievery Corporation is one of my favorite downtempo producers. I've been hooked on their downtempo trips since the 1998 4AD pressing of Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi. Since then, they've produced too many great albums and remixes to list. Aside from 4AD, they've also relesed tracks through Eighteenth Street Lounge Music, OM, Ultra, and many more of my favorite labels. Their interpretation of "Quicksand" treats the vocals with respect, highlighting the lyrics and gentle vocals with a low-key organ, and a simple drumtrack. The breakdowns are spiced up with hand percussion, lush echoing pads, and string swells.
