"There's too much rubbish flooding the market and this pushes good tracks from the racks and really gets people frustrated with vinyl to the point where they stop buying records. There's always really good stuff coming along – for example The Field – and there needs to be more focus on developing these new sounds and ideas."

Legendary German producer Thomas Fehlmann responds to a question how does he feel about the state of electronic music.

365 Days #151 - HollyWood Polka (mp3s)

151 MP3:
HollyWood Polka (2:43)

This is one of those songs that sounds way better when you don't know the whole story behind it. In this case, all that's really known is that it was intended for a lyric writing contest of some sort. But taken on its own as a finished product, it's certainly way better than it could ever be with a complete set of lyrics. There's something very hypnotic and suggestive about the repeated line "In Hollywood..." that just keeps me in stitches even though I really don't like polkas very much.

I Hate Dave Rape (MP3)

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007
Born and Raised In Los Angeles, he is a self proclaimed addict to vinyl records and clothes. He also "loves the ladies." His love for the "scene" began at the tender age of 12 when older peers would take him to "Day Parties" skipping school and dancing to all the old undergound hits like "Who is Elvis", "Some Lovin'" & "Fire Alarm" to name a few. This caused him to take trips to the now gone DMC RECORD store on melrose to buy those oh so tasty House, Techno and Hardcore mixtapes that he would play loud as fuck every afternoon on his portable boombox. He has been collecting records and dj'ing since about 97', having spun all kinds of electronic genres such as Dutch Happy Gabber, UK Happy Hardcore, Old School Techno, Classic Deep House. He has traveled the United States spinning under the name BUDDY BLUE and deemed the "Prince of Happy Gabber" for his incredibly ridiculous collection. Around 2000 he decided to start focusing on collecting Nu-Electro,Techno and House records and added the name DAVE RAPE as a new alias. He has played at countless of raves, "Hollywood" parties, art gallery openings, fashion shows & for many high profile Los Angeles promoters and alongside some of the best Electro-Techno-House dj's the scene has to offer. Some of his favorite producers at the moment are Vitalic, Jaques Lu Cont , Green Velvet, MstrKrft & Soulwax. He is known for his support of all the different electronic music scenes in Los Angeles without hesitating to shake his ass from a strict house event to a Electro-Clash freak fest and even to a Hard as Nails Techno Ho-down. You can catch him playing at many of the local Electro, Techno and House Clubs in Los Angeles and abroad. He has many mixes available for download. - Source Site:http://www.boomboomrecordings.com

MP3 Truffles: Kells, from Chi-town

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Riaa__space_set Mash-up experts RIAA are back with a new crazy-ass mash-up collection, Sounds for the Space Set, which remixes the greats of electronic music - and by greats I mean the likes of Joe Meek, Dick Hyman, Jean Jacques Perry, Esquivel, Bruce Haack, Wendy Carlos, Vangelis, Kraftwerk, and many many more. It's all free for you, and definitely worth a listen.

On the "official" release news - the R is back in R&B. That's right, a new album dropped from R. Kelly. I usually would never use that term, but "dropping" just seems so appropriate to his style. Even though his album is on heavy rotation on my CD player, I won't share any with you...you know you'll be hearing the hell out of it on Hot 97 anyway. Instead, how about a mash-up of his new single I'm a Flirt crossed with the indie-pop of Broken Social Scene. It works, too!

R_kelly_manq_3And while we're talking about Kells, in July he is releasing the next chapters of Trapped in the Closet, where we may finally learn a bit about what's up with Roxanne and Tina. Now, I know TitC has become some sort of comedy gold, but I find it to be not so much funny transcendent, as if an MSR poet has finally hit the big time. Kelly has said that the plot twists are just him trying to make his friends laugh, so, yeah, ridiculousness is a given (though that is no excuse for his haphazard rhymes). But let's not ignore the fact that he has made a multi-part soap opera with a rather dull back-beat into a cultural phenomenon. Need proof? Look not ye to all the silly spoofs - but instead to the earnest home-made remakes, usually by truly dedicated teens. They're all over YouTube, but here's my favorite (note the fluidity of the cast members):

A truly crazy solo version after the jump, as well as this week's MP3 finds.

Here's another version of TitC, this time with all parts played by the same guy - live! - as he shuffles about his bedroom. Inspiring!

How Vincent Collins made U.S. Propaganda Groovy

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Check out this short little psychedelic masterpiece by animator Vincent Collins, commissioned by the U.S. Information Agency (propaganda dispensers from 1953-1999) in 1976 to commemorate the bicentennial. Resurrecting the golden age of cartoon propaganda should be a key issue for the '08 election. Thanks to Andy for pulling this one out of the mud.

Here's another great video by Vince Collins, fans of the laser beam sound effect (hell yes) and indie rock a-la Magnetic Fields will dig it. Posted on the Saturday Morning Blog by Listener Kliph.

M-Audio Announces Vista Drivers, But Many Aren’t Ready Just Yet

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Fast Track Pro

Music hardware giant M-Audio has been one of the big obstacles to Vista compatibility for many users. (We certainly heard from many of you that you didn’t want to upgrade until M-Audio support was ready.) They’re announcing driver support today. Note that “announcing” doesn’t necessarily mean they’re available right this instant, but it does sound like most hardware should be available soon. Here’s how they put it:

M-Audio currently expects to release 32-bit Vista drivers for all of the following models during the second quarter of 2007: all FireWire products; all currently selling USB MIDI keyboards; Fast Track USB, Fast Track Pro, JamLab, MobilePre USB, Black Box and Transit USB interfaces; Conectiv and Xponent DJ interfaces; and the Revolution 5.1 PCI card.

So what’s available right now? So far, Session 1.5 software, the Fast Track USB, and the Micro are “fully qualified.” That sounds like other drivers may be upcoming but waiting on qualification. Your best bet is to keep checking the drivers page. Note that some of M-Audio’s USB devices are class-compliant and therefore don’t need drivers.

Guitar Strumming on the Nintendo DS, Coming Stateside; Videos Galore

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

M-06, the previously Japan-only game that allows you to transform a Nintendo DS into a guitar, is coming to the US via Ubisoft, reports Newsweek’s OneUp. (What’s this? DS music in Newsweek? Times have changed!)

Exclusive: Ubisoft to Publish Jam Sessions, an Improved Version of Japanese Cult Hit Guitar Game, in North America This June [OneUp — and you complain about my headlines being too long?]

OneUp exclusive announcement video

The results aren’t quite competitive with an actual guitar, but as a novelty it looks like great fun, it’s amazing it’s possible at all, and it might actually be useful as a portable songwriting device.

Commercial software isn’t the only way to make the DS into a music controller. We first saw the awesome DSMidiWifi back in November, which allows you to use the DS with any standard MIDI software.

Since M-06 has been out in Japan, we’ve got lots of videos, like Play-Asia’s in-depth overview (prior to the US announcement, so ignore the import mention if you’re in America):

Our friend and resident graphicalist Nat has some great shots of the box art:

DS Guitar…. DS SOLOOOOOOO! \m/ [onetonnemusic]

Thanks to Patrick Murphy for this one.
