Luke Fair mixes Balance 011

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

200702_balance_011_luke_fair.jpgCanadian DJ and producer Luke Fair has been chosen to compile and mix the next installment of EQ Recordings' acclaimed "Balance" compilation series.

Out worldwide in April, "Balance 011" is a funky, tech-eclectic and dubbed-out house affair with a few hints of melodic progressive, featuring tracks and remixes from the likes of Humate, Timewriter, Robag Wruhme, Francois K, David Holmes, Ian Pooley, Tom Middleton, Julien Jabre and many more.

Fair, who has created a signature style for himself by re-editing versions of tracks for his own sets, comments: "The mood of this mix will capture the sound of an entire night at a club, a full set from open to close. Every track will be heavily edited to personalize the mix a bit more, with lots of layering to make the whole thing as colorful as possible."

365 Days #60 - Travelers Insurance Company - The Triumph of Man (mp3s)

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

060 MP3:
1 The Triumph of Man - Side 1 (5:42)
2 The Triumph of Man - Side 2 (5:48)

The future ain't what it used to be. Remember when humankind had a bright future amongst the stars? Now we just hope to avoid a new theocratic Dark Age when the Gulf Stream stops and sets off the next Ice Age. That or unchecked Global Warming, it'll be a perfect time for the oil to run out.

The past ain't what it used to be either, come to think of it. The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair was controversial. It was conceived by local businessmen and not approved by the Bureau of International Expositions. Thus many countries did not participate, and the focus of the Fair became American business. That focus can be heard on this record.

At the end of the 1964 season it was discovered that the Fair was borrowing money when the accounting had made it look like it had plenty. Accusations of financial mismanagement followed, but the Fair managed to avoid bankruptcy through its second season. Attendance was significantly below what had been planned. By its close, the Fair, which was envisioned as a moneymaker for the city, was in debt. An almost commentarial coincidence, this record is pressed on red, rather than black, vinyl.

Nonetheless, in addition to this record, the Fair provided the U.S. with several structures (pavilions that weren't demolished were moved and re-used), at least one painting (Lichtenstein's "New York World's Fair"), and Disney's audio-animatronics!

TV Carnage on You Tube

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

John_ritter Perhaps the greatest clip DVDs in the world, and somewhat perfect cultural fodder for a time capsule, sampled for your entertainment pleasure:
Squirrel Melts
Rosie On the Bus vs. John Ritter
Snoop Dogg on Donnie and Marie
I'm Not Working For McDonalds
Truth is, these clips deliver best when dropped into the non-stop river of lost-mind sludge that each DVD delivers in its 75 minute glory. Rather than purely rely on individual kitschy snippets, TV Carnage often juxtaposes obvious and not-so-obvious bizarro moments with video and audio to create a whole new screwed up identity, it is freeform TV in the most straight up sense. Matlock's dog hallucinates about James Brown's disembodied head, an enraged fan's attack on soap star Michael Damian singing onstage gets dissected and analyzed at incredible length, lots of Stairway To Stardom moments of course. As my friend Tadd said about an hour into watching one DVD: "they just keep giving, don't they." Find them here.
