There are two major differences between a great vintage Strat® pickup and an average one: treble response and dynamics. A great pickup is clear and bright, but not thin-sounding. A great one makes the sound jump out of the amp when you pick hard and drop way down when you play softly, and the tone varies when the string is picked at different spots. The best pickup DiMarzio has ever heard like this was from 1958, and that's what inspired the Area '58™, with two major differences. DiMarzio's pickup has way less magnet pull, and virtually no hum.

The Blaze™ Bridge Model bears a strong resemblance to the Steve's Special™. The mids are scooped out, and both treble and bass are boosted. The hot bass response gives the seventh string a lot of impact, while opening up the midrange keeps it from getting muddy. This enables the Blaze™ Bridge Model to handle both fast soloing and clean chords, because individual notes won't smear together with heavy overdrive, and clean sounds have an almost "hi-fi" quality.

The PAF Pro humbucker has the most transparent sound of the group of Modern Classic Humbuckers. That's not to say there isn't plenty of aggressive chunk in the bottom-end, because there is a spike in the mid-range that gives the pickup a subtle aw vowel sound, like a wah-wah pedal stopped in the middle.

The difference between a vintage Strat bridge pickup sound and a classic Broadcaster or Tele tone is mostly a matter of attack and definition - the Strat stings and screams, while the Tele punches and sings. DiMarzio thought it would be neat to have a Strat pickup that does both, and this is it. The Super 2 is just the pickup to clean up the overdrive sound of a mud-heavy 24-3/4 in. scale, 2-humbucker guitar. Add snap to a dark sounding 25-1/2 in. bolt-on. It works great in the bridge or the neck.

The EMG-89 Dual Mode Pickup has been through two generations. The original Dual-mode (EMG-DM) design was incredibly sophisticated for its time (1979). The DM was an 18-Volt model with a single output available only in an Alnico magnet version.
